What Causes This Problem?

1. Worn Door Gasket

The rubber door seal (gasket) runs around the perimeter of the door opening. Over time it cracks, hardens, or gets pulled out of its channel, allowing water to escape during cycles. Run a damp cloth around the gasket — if you feel hard, brittle sections, it needs replacing.

2. Faulty Door Latch

A worn door latch that doesn't hold the door firmly against the tub allows water to spray out at the door gap. If the door feels loose during operation, the latch is likely the cause.

3. Cracked Spray Arm

A cracked lower or upper spray arm directs water sideways instead of up onto dishes, sometimes spraying directly at the door seal and causing leaks. Inspect both spray arms for cracks.

4. Loose or Damaged Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve controls water entry into the dishwasher. A loose connection or cracked valve body leaks water at the bottom of the machine during fill. Check under the dishwasher during operation.

5. Overflow from Float Switch Failure

The float switch detects the water level and shuts off the fill valve. If it sticks in the down position, the dishwasher overfills and water leaks out the door. You'll notice the dishwasher taking much longer than usual to reach the wash cycle.

Basic Troubleshooting Tips

Try these checks first. If none of them resolve the issue, it's time to call a professional.

  • Stop running the dishwasher immediately when you see a leak — water damage to cabinets and floors accumulates quickly.
  • Put paper towels under the dishwasher and run a short cycle. Check where the paper gets wet first — bottom front means door seal, bottom rear means inlet valve.
  • Open the dishwasher mid-cycle carefully — if water is near the door bottom, the door gasket or latch is the cause.
  • Check for too much detergent — regular dish soap (not dishwasher detergent) causes excessive suds that overflow.
  • Inspect the door gasket by touch. It should be soft and pliable along its entire length.

⚠️ When to Call a Professional

If you can't identify the source within the first check, or if the leak is coming from the back of the unit (inlet valve or drain hose), call a professional. Water damage compounds fast.
