What Causes This Problem?

1. Clogged Drain Pump Filter

Front-load washers have a drain pump filter, usually accessed behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine. Lint, coins, hair ties, and small clothing items collect here over time and block drainage. This is the #1 cause of front-loader drain failures.

2. Blocked or Kinked Drain Hose

The drain hose runs from the back of the washer to the standpipe or utility sink. A kink, clog, or a hose pushed too far into the standpipe (creating a siphon effect) all prevent proper drainage. Check the full length of the hose.

3. Failed Drain Pump

If the filter is clear and the hose is unobstructed, the drain pump motor may have burned out or seized. You'll often hear a humming sound during the drain cycle with no water movement. This requires pump replacement.

4. Lid Switch Failure (Top Loaders)

Top-loading washers won't spin or drain if the lid switch isn't triggered. A broken switch tells the machine the lid is open even when it's closed. This is a common and inexpensive repair.

5. Blocked Standpipe

If multiple drains in your home are slow, the problem may be in the household plumbing, not the washer. Check other drains near the laundry area.

Basic Troubleshooting Tips

Try these checks first. If none of them resolve the issue, it's time to call a professional.

  • Run the drain/spin cycle alone — if the machine drains on that cycle but not during a full wash, the issue may be a setting or load size.
  • For front-loaders: place towels down and slowly open the filter access panel at the bottom — water will pour out. Clean the filter thoroughly.
  • Check the drain hose where it enters the standpipe — the hose should only go in about 6 inches, not all the way down.
  • Listen carefully during the drain cycle. Humming without water movement = pump failure. Silence = lid switch or control issue.
  • Run a small, empty load. If it drains, the previous load may have been overloaded.

⚠️ When to Call a Professional

If clearing the filter and checking the hose doesn't fix the issue, the pump or lid switch needs professional replacement. Standing water left in the drum promotes mold growth — don't delay.
